Copyright Disney.  All rights reserved.
Here's some of our first news coming out of the D23 Expo 2015 in Anaheim!

Disney has announced that the Jungle Cruise Navigation Company Ltd. Skipper Canteen will open in Adventureland in the Magic Kingdom.  According to the official Disney Parks Blog, this new restaurant will open in late 2015.  Based on the artist rendering above, it looks like this will go into the space around what was the Aloha Isle.

The restaurant will be staffed by Jungle Cruise skippers, so you can bet there will be plenty more bad jokes coming!

Didn't I say D23 would be worth it? Now see what D23'ers can do!

When Disney first announced D23, the Official Community for Disney fans, many scoffed and huffed that D23 wouldn't be worth the $75 membership fee. It was said then, there would be more to come with a D23 membership than just the magazines, litho, D23 Expo and access to exclusive merchandise.

Now comes the proof.

The D23 Web site has announced a series of D23 Member-only events going on this summer.

A free exclusive screening of UP at the El Capitan Theater in Hollywood on May 28 and pin trading event.

Special seating for the final Flower Power Concert series at Epcot on May 31, featuring Tony Orlando. Afterwards, D23 members can attend a free Illuminations dessert party.

Special access to the 1,000th performance of Mary Poppins on Broadway on June 24 (ticket required). A similar package is offered for Mary Poppins in Chicago on the same night.

Special access to a performance of The Lion King at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas (ticket required).

FREE (yes, I said FREE) tours of the Disney Studios and the Disney Archives (this is HUGE!!) on June 27 and August 15.

Free screening of the recently restored "Disneyland U.S.A." and panel discussion with Tony Baxter, Dave Smith and Ed Hobelman on July 17, the 54th birthday of Disneyland.

Exclusive preview access to the new Walt Disney Family Museum in September. The museum won't open until October, but D23 members will get a free preview tour!

I'm sure there's more to come for D23 members. Now what do you think? Is D23 worth it?

You bet!

I'm 23 - are you?

D23 update - D23 pins to go on sale very soon

I happened to be checking the D23 Boutique to see if any of those "temporarily sold out" pins might again be up for sale, when, what to my wondering eyes should disappear, but the links to those (and any) pins.

Late this evening, I saw a new update on the D23 Web site:

"For those D23 members who missed out on our exclusive pins the first time around, we have great news! This week Disney Shopping will be putting the 'D23' and 'Plane Crazy' pins back on sale, and next week, look for the Tinker Bell and Jiminy Cricket pins to return."

There you have it D23 fans! Look for the return of those popular pins starting later this week and into next week. There's no word on how many pins are available - so if you want them, better get them fast!

UPDATE #2: The "D23" lapel pin and the Plane Crazy pins are now on sale as of 4/23.

Another D23 pin is sold out

The second in a series of D23 Charter Member pins has sold out. This pin featured Jiminy Cricket showing his D23 badge. It was released this morning and already it's gone. I guess there either are a bunch of D23 members out there or the supply was very limited. I missed out on this one as well. I'm going to have to be quicker on the draw to get the next one. Supposedly there will be 10 in all. You can bet any Mickey Mouse related pin will go like lightning.

"One Man's Dream" at DHS now brought to you by D23

According to the official D23 Web site, the "One Man's Dream" attraction at Disney's Hollywood Studios has now been associated with the new D23 Official Community for Disney Fans.

As part of this new association, new D23 theming and a new display case featuring the room of a Disney fan (identity not given) have been added. Included in the new display case are items many Disney fans might find in their own homes such as an Ultimate Wall-E, pins, lithographs (including the new exclusive litho for D23 members), a D23 membership certificate, toys, Disney books and more.

Based on some photos included in the article, it appears that this new display case replaces the old Disney in the Digital World display which showed demos from the now-closed Virtual Magic Kingdom (VMK).

D23 Update: Surprise gift is an exclusive lithograph

D23 fans are starting to see their "surprise" gift arrive in the mail.

And the big secret is... (drum roll please).... a very nice lithograph!

The following letter from Stephen Clark, head of D23, came with the lithograph:

"We are pleased to present you with this D23 member exclusive lithograph as your Charter Year gift from the new Walt Disney Archives Collection. Walt Disney Animation Studios Art Director Paul Felix created "Putting a Smile on the World" in celebration of Mickey's 80th anniversary last November, capturing Mickey's trademark charm, youthful exuberance and optimism."

"The entire D23 team hopes you'll enjoy and cherish this warm, wonderful addition to your collection and we once again thank you for being a part of D23 in its charter year."

Felix's print was selected as part of a portrait competition held among the different artists and animators at Disney. This tradition started with Walt Disney, himself, who held such a competition that was won by John Hench. He would continue to paint Mickey's official anniversary portraits until Hench died in 2004.

This is a very nice BIG print (original is oil on canvas). It measures 30" tall by 20" wide and is on archival #65 Cougar Natural Cover Stock with fade-resistant, oil-based process inks. A print of this size in the Art of Disney Store would run quite a pretty penny (like $50 or more!). Anyone waiting to see what the gift is before deciding to join D23 should give it serious consideration. The photo doesn't do it justice - it is a very nice print. For Disney art collectors, this is a nice piece (and it's helpful that it's a somewhat standard size so we can find pre-made frames).

If I had any doubts about becoming a D23 member, those doubts are gone. I'm quite glad and proud to say, yes I am 23!

If anyone from the D23 team is reading this: Thank you!

Disney Movie Rewards offers D23 merchandise

As was mentioned in the news conference about D23 following the official announcement, Disney Movie Rewards (DMR) would be offering D23-related items as part of its rewards program. The first two items are now available for Disney Movie Rewards members.

The first is a DMR-exclusive pin (see photo). Collectors can receive this pin by redeeming 500 points. There are only 2300 of these pins.

The other D23-related item is a D23 Silver and Swarovski Crystal Necklace . This necklace presents the D23 logo accented with a clear Swarovski Crystal. Collectors can receive this necklace by redeeming 1000 points.

My thanks to April at ScrappingtheMagic for letting me know about these new items on DMR.

DisneyDaddy joins in D23 Roundtable on WDWRadio

I had the pleasure of joining Ryan Wilson of the Main Street Gazette on Lou Mongello's WDW Radio Show to talk about the launch of D23 - the Official Community for Disney Fans. Together we discussed the elements of D23, the telephone news conference that took place shortly after the D23 announcement was made at Disney's annual shareholders meeting on March 10 and our thoughts about where D23 could go in the future.

It was a great conversation and I encourage both fans and critics of D23 to hear our talk as we get into the good and bad of D23.

My thanks to Lou Mongello and Ryan Wilson for having me on the show!

D23 - is it worth it? Depends on your interests

It's been a few days since the big announcement about D23 - the Official Community for Disney Fans. Since the announcement came out, I, like countless other Disney fans, have pondered the merits of this new group. Membership in D23 comes with a big price tag: $75 each year.

Almost from the very moment Disney CEO Bob Iger made the D23 announcement, Disney fans asked themselves and others the million dollar question: "Is it worth it?"

The answer, I have come to believe, really depends on your interests in what D23 has to offer.

Membership in D23 includes the following:
  • Four high quality coffee-table style magazines (one every quarter). These are on sale at Barnes & Noble for $15.95 per issue (total of about $64 per year).
  • A surprise collectible gift (so far there's no word what this is)
  • Membership card and certificate suitable for framing. The certificate features many of Disney's most beloved characters drawn by Disney Master Artist David Pacheco.
  • Access to purchase exclusive merchandise (including shirts, pins, artwork and other items)
  • Subscription to the new D23 Fanfare e-newsletter distributed bi-weekly.
  • Discounted admission to the new D23 Expo, held (at least for the first four years) in Anaheim. This expo is a huge Disney-fest - the first Expo, this September, may offer the first screenings of Disney/Pixar's new film Up.
So now that we've listed what you get for $75 a year, it's time to pick this apart. If you are interested in the magazines, they're $16 a piece. At four a year, that ads up to $64 a year. While I don't know what the surprise collectible will be, I'll bet it's retail value probably is more than $11 (which is all that's left from that $75 after deducting the retail magazine price). The rest of the benefits are gravy. Don't forget the exclusive merchandise - the pins are very nice looking (for those of you into pins).

All this being said, D23 isn't for everybody - nor should it be. Those not interested in the magazines might not be as inclined to join D23 if all they really want is the option to purchase exclusive merchandise given that D23 members don't get any sort of discount... just access. Also, if you can't make it to the D23 Expos in California (like me), that might make D23 less attractive.

It was with all this in mind that I considered whether or not to join D23. In the end, I decided to give D23 a one-year trial, despite the fact that I won't be able to go to the D23 Expo (much as I wish I could).

Remember this, D23 is an OPTION. You are not forced to join D23 to get Disney news. There will still be all the same fan podcasts, message boards, Web sites and blogs (like the DisneyDaddy!) that will continue to provide Disney news and entertainment. So it all goes back to what I said in the beginning - what are your interests and does D23 meet those interests? If so, then you might want to give D23 a try, if not, then sit back and don't worry about it.

I'm sure we'll be hearing more and more about D23 and all it has to offer in the coming weeks. Remember anyone can go to the D23 Web site to read the news and other content - that's free to anyone.

It's official: D23 is a fan club

Disney announced today in their annual meeting the launch of "D23" an offical community for Disney fans. This exclusive fan club, costs about $75 a year. With that membership fee, fans receive the new "Disney Twenty Three" magazine, produced quarterly. I picked up the premier issue of this magazine today at my local bookstore and it is very nice (it's the black and white cover shown above).

Charter members (those who join this year) also will receive what Disney is calling a "surprise collectible gift," a membership certificate suitable for framing, access to exclusive special merchandise and discounts on the D23 Expo (to be held at Disneyland Sept. 10-13).

I've had a chance to check out some of the exclusive merchandise and it is PRICEY. For instance, you can purchase the "Limited Edition Walt Disney Executive Collection Pen" for the low price of only $850. That's right, $850 for a writing utensil. Other items include exclusive shirts (which aren't too bad on price) to limited edition artwork (which is a bit expensive, but comparable to nice artwork at Art of Disney stores in the parks and Downtown Disney).

Also during today's annual meeting, Disney CEO Bob Iger announced the names of the two Disney Cruise Line ships currently under construction. They will be called the Dream and the Fantasy.
